In 2052, the third world war broke out on Earth. The planet's ecosystems and defenses were very nearly destroyed, leaving humanity to pick up the pieces once the fighting ended.
Following the peace accord at the end of the war, humans renewed their exploration of space by focusing on the exploration of the solar system. Exploration led to colonization, first of the moon, then of Mars, then of some of the outer moons of Saturn and Jupiter. It was a time of scientific discovery, of prosperity, and the human race was thriving. Humans developed the technology necessary to achieve interstellar travel and visited the planet Alpha Centauri B, shortly after the decision was made to terraform the planet and prepare it for colonization. The process would take decades, and the time needed to reach Alpha Centauri B was itself ten years, however the human race continued onward and outward and into the stars.
An anomaly was observed at the outer reaches of the solar system some fifty years after the colonization of Titan. Scientists were unsure of the nature of the anomaly, though on further exploration, it was hypothesized to be a wormhole. This theory was given more clout when it was observed that animals and human beings were being spit out of the anomaly and into space, though unfortunately those souls were dead on arrival.
In order to rescue the newly arrived people, a space station was built right near the mouth of the wormhole, fully equipped to care for and aid them. This system of interception and assimilation into society continued on for the next thirty years.
That's when the monsters arrived. Or rather, monster. After thirty years of spitting out humans, animals, and the occasional humanoid alien, the wormhole deposited a large monster capable of surviving in space, one that promptly decimated the space station and left it uninhabitable. Thus began an era of terror in the solar system. The monster continued it's path of destruction, destroying the Saturn colonies before finally being defeated as it approached Jupiter. With the space station destroyed, the humans that were pulled through the wormhole after the monster were deposited into space and died immediately. The colonists of Saturn's moons were left without sources of food and oxygen and all of them were killed. And while the earth mourned, the wormhole opened up again and another monster came through. Unprepared for the second wave, one of the Jupiter colonies suffered extreme losses before the monster was destroyed.
Then, the wormhole seemed to go dormant.
Months, then years passed without a recurrence, and eventually the colonies were rebuilt. Initially, the idea of developing more advanced weapons to defend the solar system from the monsters was proposed, however this was abandoned when twenty-five years passed and wormhole remained inactive. Instead, funding and energies were poured into developing a planned exodus of the solar system in order to colonize a suitable planet beyond. Terraforming operations proved a great success, and the race seemed poised to continue their unheeded expansion into the stars. However, two short years after the colonization efforts began, the wormhole reactivated and monsters began arriving anew.
This prompted departures from the solar system on a massive scale. The wealthy and powerful were among the first to leave, though there were humans who either could not afford to leave or refused to leave who remained on Earth, not quite abandoned, but no longer protected either. It was up to those left behind to develop a defensive strategy using whatever weapons and equipment were left behind.
One such piece of technology were mechasuits leftover from the terraforming operations on Titan. Once considered state of the art, these machines are now one hundred years old and wildly outdated. However, they are still spaceworthy, and with some substantial repairs had the potential to be outfitted as weapons. However it would take time to upgrade the suits, and it would take a minimum of six people to pilot each suit. Even more pressing, the piloting system developed and perfected to allow for interstellar travel and defense required that the pilots be supremely in tune with one another. Finding candidates to fit the criteria was next to impossible.
Or it was until the wormhole began spitting out people again. A scientist/survivor of the wormhole submitted an hypothesis that those who had traveled through the wormhole had their brainwaves altered in a way that gave them intuition with one another and allowed for better cooperation in combat situations. This theory was tested out using aging wormhole survivors and was proved correct. A new program was implemented to care for train the newer wormhole travelers and recruit them into the solar system defense corps. Refit operations commenced on the now derelict space station, salvaging it and turning it into the new base of operations for the recruits.
All the while, smaller monsters have been popping through the wormhole. The solar system's weapons supplies are reaching their limits. If the recruits are not ready within six months, or if there is a major attack within three months, the weapons supply will be exhausted.

The shape of the world changed after WWIII. Living conditions in large cities vary depending on who you are, where you are, and what kind of money you have to spend. The biggest danger is air quality-control. The thinned ozone layer makes hard labour difficult to perform without some sort of oxygen mask, and regardless of your geographic location, it's advised that you spend as little time as possible outside. Extreme weather conditions are common and no matter where you are, you're probably only waiting there until you can afford to hop on the next transport out to Alpha Centauri.
